POSITION SUMMARY:
Conducts routine tests related to medical microbiology, reports accordingly for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease and performs related duties following established standards and practices.
POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:
1) Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
2) Performs routine Bacteriology procedures including inoculation and reading of plates, prepares and interprets Gram stains, acid-fast stains and fungal microscopic preparations, and also performs routine AFB work including specimen processing and staining.
3) Receives collection of specimens and labels them appropriately; discards them after test or stores for future reference.
4) Supervises and coordinates technical activities in microbiology related to preparation of sterile media for use in growing bacterial cultures, solutions, reagents and stains according to standard formulas and procedures.
5) Perform routine test analysis in the microbiology section.
6) Demonstrates competency on all test methods, lab SOPs (standard operating procedures), and instrument calibrations to a level sufficient to perform all assigned work
7) Prepares samples for analysis as required for prescribed test using appropriate sample methods and procedures
Maintains stock of prepared laboratory materials according to approved lab procedures.
