JOB SUMMARY
The Specialist - Endodontics is responsible for examination, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the nerves, and the pulp; performs complex procedures such as root canal in the molars and operation in cases of infection of the tooth nerve. Plans, coordinates, administers and supervises patient care activities in accordance with Ministry of Health regulations, Hospital Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules & Regulations and Dental Department Policies & Guidelines.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Operational Duties.
- Participates in assessment, implementation and evaluation of patient care needs.
- Undertakes work in accordance with the Hospital’s procedures and operating policies; works within agreed quality frameworks.
- Interviews patients visiting the clinic; ensures fulfillment of clinic visit formalities before treatment.
- Examines teeth, assesses treatment options and formulates comprehensive treatment with the patients
- Develops a treatment plan, post diagnosis, which may include dental surgery; removes infected tissue or conducts root canal therapy, depending on the diagnosis.
- Handles patients with dental injuries such as oral trauma, cracked or broken teeth,
teeth that have been twisted in the socket, and teeth that have been knocked out
- Treats dental issues resulting from problematic tissues and nerves of the teeth; examines tissues and nerves using dental equipment or procedures such as X-ray.
- Treats exposure of pulp by pulp capping or removal of pulp from pulp chamber and
root canal, using dental instruments.
- Treats infected root canal and related tissues, and fills pulp chamber and canal
with endodontic materials.
- Removes pathologic tissue at apex of tooth, surgically.
- Administers anesthetics to limit the amount of pain experienced by patients during procedures
- Apply fluoride or sealants to teeth and bleaches discolored teeth to restore natural color.
- Ensures proper documentation of patient details in patient records and maintains strict confidentiality.
- Maintains appropriate patients charts and updates records for continuity of care.
Patient Care
- Maintains a work environment that promotes high standards for patient care, customer service, and ethical behavior.
- Takes patient history, conducts physical examination requests and interprets necessary investigation as the patient’s condition mandates.
- Advise s/ instructs patients regarding preventive dental care, the causes and treatment of dental problems, or oral health care.
- Monitors patients' conditions / progress and reevaluates treatment as necessary.
- Arranges appropriate referrals for
patients in need for other medical or dental need.
Compliance with Medical Ethics
- Follows established Ministry of Health regulations, Hospital Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules & Regulations and the Dental Department Policies & Guidelines.
- Ensures implementation of the standard concepts, practices, and procedures
within the field of Dentistry.
- Exhibits appropriate personal and interpersonal professional
behavior.
- Recognizes limits of personal skills and
knowledge by appropriately consulting other Physicians while caring for the
patient.
- Shows a pattern of maintaining current personal clinical skills and knowledge by Continuing Medical Education (CME).
Education
- Keeps up to date in developments relevant to best practice in Dentistry.
- Helps in professional development of all staff and provides/shares teaching materials as part of the professional development of the staff.
- Attends accredited conferences and meetings to update personal level of clinical practice, teaching and management skills in line with Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements.
Other Duties
- Oversees administrative tasks, including bookkeeping and purchase of equipment and supplies
- Attends regularly scheduled meeting for the improvement of patient care services and delivery
- Attends all requested Clinical Governance meetings in relation to the Dentistry
Service.
- Accepts all other additional assignments found necessary by the Clinical Director- Dental.
